St Paul’s Bay becoming an overdeveloped ‘pigsty’, residents say

Writer: Stuart GrayStuart Gray

In July 2023, Times of Malta reported on a protest in Buġibba Square, where residents voiced concerns over the overdevelopment and deteriorating conditions in St. Paul’s Bay. Plans were unveiled for a regional health center and adjacent hotel, necessitating the demolition of a skate park and British-era military structures. This development also included replacing a 120-car parking lot with a four-story underground facility accommodating over 850 vehicles, raising concerns about increased traffic and potential chaos.

As of February 2025, construction in Buġibba Square has finally commenced. Despite reaching out to the new mayor regarding the potential acquisition of the skate park and historical structures for the Honey Badger Youth Club and No Guilt Cafe, no response has been received. This lack of engagement underscores the pressing need for dedicated youth spaces and community-driven initiatives in St. Paul’s Bay.

The Urgent Need for Youth Infrastructure

The youth of St. Paul’s Bay are in dire need of infrastructure that fosters social connections beyond the digital realm. Physical spaces like youth clubs and activity centers provide essential environments for personal development, community engagement, and the cultivation of new skills. Without such spaces, young individuals may feel isolated, leading to a decline in community cohesion and an increase in social issues.

Community Clean-Up Initiatives

The characterization of St. Paul’s Bay as a "pigsty" by residents highlights the urgent need for organized clean-up projects. Accumulated rubbish and abandoned buildings not only tarnish the locality's aesthetic appeal but also pose health hazards. Community-driven clean-up efforts can rejuvenate public spaces, instill a sense of pride among residents, and deter neglectful behaviors.

Challenges Faced by the Honey Badger Youth Club and No Guilt Cafe

Despite the clear need for such initiatives, the Honey Badger Youth Club and No Guilt Cafe have encountered significant obstacles, including:

  • Lack of Funding: Securing financial support for equipment, business cards, and official registration has been challenging.

  • Administrative Hurdles: Repeated attempts to engage with local authorities have yielded little to no response, stalling potential collaborations.

  • Community Awareness: Without adequate resources, raising awareness and garnering support for the initiative remains difficult.

Call to Action

To transform St. Paul’s Bay into a vibrant and supportive environment for its youth, collective action is imperative:

  • Support from Local Authorities: The municipality should actively engage with community initiatives, providing necessary permissions and potential funding avenues.

  • Community Engagement: Residents are encouraged to participate in clean-up drives, workshops, and discussions to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility.

  • Sponsorship and Donations: Local businesses and philanthropists can play a pivotal role by offering financial support or in-kind donations to facilitate the establishment and operation of youth-centric projects.

By embracing the resilient spirit of the honey badger, the community can overcome these challenges, ensuring that the youth of St. Paul’s Bay have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.
