Petting Zoo? What About a Future for Our Youth? €700,000 for a petting Zoo for Old People!!

Writer: Stuart GrayStuart Gray

This week Times of Malta claim: Malta proudly unveiled a €700,000 petting zoo at St. Vincent de Paul Residence, giving elderly residents access to goats, ponies, rabbits, and other farm animals as part of an animal therapy initiative. While no one denies that animal interaction can be beneficial for seniors, this hefty price tag raises a serious question: Is this really the most pressing need?

A Different Reality: The Forgotten Youth and Homeless Seniors

While ponies and petting farms get government funding, not a single euro has been granted to help fund a safe community hub for youths, homeless seniors, and struggling families.

💡 The Honey Badger Charity Youth Club & No Guilt Café was designed to fill this gap—offering young people a place to belong, a chance to grow, and a healthy, inclusive space for the entire community. But guess what? Not €700,000. Not €70,000. Not even €7. Zero funding.

At the same time, Malta’s homeless population over 55 has nowhere to go. Shelters exist for younger men and women, but older individuals—many of whom worked their entire lives—are left with nothing. Why isn’t this a funding priority?

A Future That’s Stacked Against Young People

We constantly criticize young people for hanging out in the streets, but where exactly are they supposed to go?

  • Sports? Too expensive.

  • Entertainment? Costs money.

  • Education? Interrupted by COVID lockdowns.

  • Housing? Completely unaffordable due to skyrocketing property prices and increased competition from mass immigration.

  • Jobs? Being taken over by automation and technology.

  • Faith? Religious values are being dismantled, replaced with social media-fueled anxieties about sexuality, climate fear-mongering, and financial instability.

Society tells them: Work hard, be patient, and good things will come. But how can they believe that when every system around them is crumbling? No wonder some turn to trouble—they feel abandoned.

Where’s the Investment in Our Future?

Instead of petting zoos for seniors, why not invest in:

  • A proper community hub where young people can develop leadership skills, play sports, and engage in activities without financial barriers.

  • Shelters for homeless seniors who are completely overlooked by current housing programs.

  • Mental health initiatives that help youths find direction in an increasingly chaotic world.

Our youth don’t need rabbits to pet. They need opportunities, support, and a future worth believing in.

Malta just spent €700,000 on a petting zoo. Meanwhile, the Honey Badger Charity Youth Club & No Guilt Café is fighting for even the most basic funding to get started.

Not a single donation from the government, the Church, corporations, or citizens.

This isn’t just about money. It’s about priorities. What kind of future are we building if we keep ignoring the real issues?
