Volunteer Treasurer (Part-Time → Full-Time): Help Build the Honey Badger Community Hub
Honey Badger Charity Youth Club in San Pawl’s Bay is recruiting a trustworthy Treasurer to start part-time during our upcoming Charity Boxing Event and 12-hour Telethon, with the plan to transition to a paid, full-time role when the Charity Community Hub opens. You’ll be essential to turning donor goodwill into lasting youth programs, free meals for the homeless, and a safe place for young people. We provide training, governance, and insurance so volunteers can serve confidently.
Why a part-time Treasurer now? The path to paid full-time work
We need someone who can commit a few hours weekly to bookkeeping, authorizing payments, reconciling receipts, and preparing simple monthly reports for the Board during the run-up to our fundraising events. After the Boxing Event and the Telethon, when the hub closes its first funding round and we begin operations, we intend to offer the Treasurer a full-time paid position managing the hub’s finances. This pathway helps us secure registration and funding fast while giving the Treasurer real influence in building the organization from the ground up.
What the Treasurer will do (part-time duties → full-time expansion)
Part-time (while events run):
Maintain accurate income/expenditure ledgers for event funds.
Ensure dual-signatory approval for payments.
Prepare weekly cash reconciliations and short reports for the event organizers.
Help prepare donation receipts for sponsors and attendees.
Full-time (hub open):
Full bookkeeping and payroll preparation.
Monthly financial statements and budgeting for programs.
Managing bank relations, grants, and donor reporting.
Working with auditors and compliance officers to file required returns.
Protections and governance: how we keep volunteers safe
We will implement standard protections used across Malta’s voluntary sector:
Clear role description and written finance procedures (spending limits, dual signatories).
Onboard training and bookkeeping templates — you will not be left to manage alone.
Annual returns and accounts filed with the Office of the Commissioner for Voluntary Organizations (CVO) as required by law. The CVO provides enrolment, returns submission and a complaints/investigations process that helps protect beneficiaries and volunteers. Voluntary Organisations Office+1
Insurance where feasible: public liability and officials’ indemnity to protect officers against rare claims.
Board oversight and periodic external review (or volunteer audit) to maintain transparency.
Binance, the Community Chest Fund, and what it means for local charities
Recent Maltese coverage described a large increase in value of a crypto donation originally pledged in 2018 by Binance (a donation initially reported at roughly $200k worth of BNB tokens). Over time that holding has appreciated in value and was reported in trade and national outlets to be worth tens of millions of dollars (coverage mentions figures like about $36–$39 million in recent reporting). Several outlets reported that the Malta Community Chest Fund (MCCF) has either declined to cash out due to reputational concerns or is involved in a dispute over how to handle the funds. Times of Malta+1
Key verified points from the recent reporting:
The original donation was made in 2018; its value has risen dramatically as BNB’s market price increased. Times of Malta
The MCCF has publicly signaled reputational concerns and there have been reports it would not immediately cash out the tokens. Times of Malta+1
The story has produced public debate in Malta — including comments from the Prime Minister urging reconsideration and the President expressing concern — but there is not public evidence of widespread legal actions targeting registered charities generally because of this story. Coverage so far focuses specifically on the MCCF’s situation and how to handle the crypto donation. Times of Malta+1
What Binance coverage means for a volunteer Treasurer at a local charity
Reputational risk is real but limited in scope. The high-profile Binance/MCCF story is specific to a national fund and a crypto windfall — not a broad indictment of everyday charities. The MCCF response (hesitation to cash out) and public debate show institutions are cautious, which is positive for good governance. Times of Malta
Registered charities have protections and oversight. The Commissioner for Voluntary Organizations requires annual returns and has complaint/investigation channels; strong internal controls (dual authorization, audited accounts where necessary) reduce personal risk for volunteers. MaltaCVS+1
Most charities operate without incident. While media attention focuses on outlier cases, most of the more than a thousand registered volunteer organisations in Malta function every day without scandal. The National Audit Office and other institutional reviews emphasize strengthening governance, which helps keep volunteer roles safe. NAO
Why the reward outweighs the risk (a practical perspective)
Life involves risk — driving, sports and even working outdoors bring small chances of mishap. The Treasurer role is administrative and the most common “risk” is human error in bookkeeping — which is manageable with training, procedures, and oversight. In return you’ll:
Make possible free meals, youth activities and safe spaces for young people in San Pawl’s Bay.
Build a lasting community asset and a transparent organization that attracts donors and grants.
Gain meaningful governance experience and the opportunity to transition into a paid leadership role.
How to apply & next steps (call to action)
If you can commit to a part-time role now (a few hours weekly) and would like to grow into full-time work, please email sugargray24@gmail.com with “Treasurer Application” in the subject line. Include a short CV and a few lines about your bookkeeping experience. We’ll arrange a short interview and show you the simple financial controls and training we will provide.
