A Story of Resilience and Hope

A deeply moving Times of Malta piece captures Shaun Desira’s courageous journey through suicidal despair—and his return to life with renewed hope. His story is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest moments, connection and compassion can make all the difference.

Rising Youth Suicide Rates in Malta: A Silent Crisis

Recent data from Times of Malta reveals a worrying upward trend in youth suicides and attempts:

  • In 2023, five individuals aged 15–24 died by suicide—the highest annual figure since 2014.

  • In just the first half of the same year, 19 young people, including one under 14, attempted suicide—a total that matched all of 2021. Times of Malta

Compounding concerns, NGOs including the Richmond Foundation and Victim Support Malta spotlight multiple stressors: educational pressures, economic insecurity, lack of green spaces, and social media-fueled mental exhaustion. Long waiting lists and under-resourced mental health systems make it even harder for young people to access help. Times of Malta, The Malta Independent

Though a study by Aġenzija Żgħażagħ found that 74.2% of 13- to 18-year-olds felt negatively affected by COVID-19, particularly in their mental health, there’s little evidence that support systems have adequately grown to meet their needs. Malta Daily

Building Hope: The Role of Honey Badger Youth Club & No Guilt Café

At Honey Badger Youth Club and No Guilt Café, we’re determined to fill that gap—with action, not just awareness. Here's how:

What We Offer

  • Safe, offline spaces where youths can connect, reflect, and heal—without the constant pressures of digital life.

  • Accessible mental health outreach, led by trained volunteers and peer support, to reduce isolation.

  • Creative programs and community events that foster resilience and a sense of belonging.

  • Partnerships with schools and wellness professionals to expand our reach and provide timely guidance.

Why It Matters

  • Personal stories like Shaun’s show that emotional support paired with community connection can be life-saving.

  • Between elevated suicide rates and inadequate public infrastructure, Malta’s youth need more than therapy—they need refuge, purpose, and empowerment.

Let’s Build a Lifeline Together

We call on:

  • Schools, colleges, and universities to collaborate by donating mental health materials or volunteering with us.

  • Local businesses and philanthropists to sponsor programming, equipment, or outreach days.

  • Families and residents to share their skills or even just sit with a young person who feels unseen.

Together, we can transform challenges into community-driven care and inspiration.
