Stepping up as Treasurer for the Honey Badger Charity Youth Club and Community Hub is one of the most impactful volunteer roles you can take in our community. Yes — it carries responsibility. But compared with everyday activities such as driving a car or scuba diving in Malta’s waters, the real legal and personal exposure is low when the organization follows good governance. Our volunteers are supported with clear procedures, training, and oversight — so you can help shape futures without fear.

The scale: Malta’s voluntary sector and how common problems really are

Malta has a mature and active voluntary sector. Hundreds — and in many areas thousands — of voluntary organizations operate across the islands. While occasional disputes or investigations are covered by the press, the number of serious prosecutions or criminal investigations targeting volunteer treasurers is very small relative to the overall scale of the sector. The system also provides formal complaint and investigation routes so concerns can be raised and resolved transparently.

Compare the risk: Treasurer vs. driving or diving

Every day of life carries risk. Driving and diving are routine activities enjoyed by many Maltese residents and visitors — both carry small but real probabilities of accidents. The Treasurer role is primarily administrative: the main risks are bookkeeping mistakes, missed filings, or governance errors. These are predictable and, crucially, preventable with the right processes in place.

Practical protections we use to keep treasurers safe

Honey Badger Youth Club will implement simple, proven safeguards so our Treasurer can volunteer confidently:

• Clear governance and written procedures: job description, spending limits, and dual signatory rules.

• Accurate annual returns and simple accounting: timely filings and transparent records.

• Training and bookkeeping support: templates, mentoring, and access to basic accounting tools.

• Insurance and indemnity: public liability and officials’ indemnity to protect volunteers from rare claims.

• Open records and oversight: monthly financial reports to the board and external review or volunteer audit.

"What about lawsuits or criminal investigations?" — what to know

There is no single public dataset listing every legal case involving voluntary organizations in Malta over a decade. Individual news stories sometimes highlight isolated incidents, but a comprehensive tally is not publicly posted. For an official breakdown, the Office of the Commissioner for Voluntary Organizations (CVO) or relevant government offices can be asked for records under Freedom of Information. What matters for volunteers is that established complaint and investigation processes exist — and they are designed to protect beneficiaries, volunteers and the public.
